Carlos Bocanegra

Founding Member, Technical Director

A National Soccer Hall of Famer and one of the most accomplished defenders in American soccer history, Carlos Bocanegra captained the United States Men's National Team for six years — wearing the armband in 64 of his 110 international appearances across two FIFA World Cups, two Gold Cup championships, and a historic victory over No. 1-ranked Spain at the 2009 Confederations Cup.

Before representing his country at the game's highest level, he earned MLS Rookie of the Year honors and became the first player ever to win MLS Defender of the Year twice — then spent a decade playing in the English Premier League, France's Ligue 1, and Scotland's Premier League, among the elite professionals of his generation.

Bocanegra’s path to the professional and international ranks began at UCLA, where he helped lead the Bruins to the NCAA National Championship and established himself as one of the nation’s premier collegiate defenders.

After retiring in 2014, Bocanegra built Atlanta United FC from the ground up as Vice President and Technical Director — overseeing the Academy, the development pathway, and a player portfolio exceeding $100 million in transfers, culminating in the club's 2018 MLS Cup championship. He later co-chaired the Technical Development Committee at U.S. Soccer, helping shape the future of the American game at the national level.

Bocanegra co-founded Atlanta Football Club with a singular purpose: to deliver the standard of player development he has experienced and demanded at every level of the game. He has walked the complete pathway — from youth fields in Southern California to the World Cup stage as his nation's captain, and from front-office decision-making at a championship MLS club to the national governing bodies of American soccer. Every training methodology, every coaching hire, and every development decision at this club is informed by that complete, lived understanding.
